Chapter

Fourteen

“Where is he?” I hissed to Preston, who was watching Casey apply the final touches of my Artithian hairstyle before I took the long walk through the convention to the stage area.

I’d been practicing nonstop all week to make sure I had the words, and the dance moves down, running the whole song with pyrotechnics and jumbo screens and backup dancers until I was sure my retinas were permanently scarred from the flashes of light, and I couldn’t possibly lift another finger. I’d performed for similar sized crowds before at venues like state fairs, but that was before I had the backing of Harper Music and its army of professionals. Now, the pressure to deliver felt ten times greater. That and I had to take back my thought about it being a little sci-fi convention… When I’d walked in that morning before eight, the place was already a sea of enthusiasts, slowly flowing around the venue in search of their favorite niche of entertainment.

“I’m sorry, Monica. I don’t know,” Preston said, shrugging, but keeping his hands on his hips. “Maybe he’s running late.”

It was time to clear the air and put things behind us, even if all it did was improve our professional relationship. Preston had been a friend to me when I felt like I had nobody, and I felt like I could be the bigger person.

“All done, little lady,” Casey announced after one last cloud of hairspray floated to the ground.

He spun his chair around, and I thanked him for his help, rubbing my sweaty palms along my black leather pants, though it did little to soak up the moisture. I checked my appearance in a floor-length mirror nearby and was satisfied that I looked just as good as I had when we’d recorded my music video. I certainly wasn’t the oddest-looking alien that’d strolled the convention hallways.

“They’re ready for you,” Preston said. “Security is going to walk us backstage.”

“I don’t think anyone is going to recognize me,” I said with a soft laugh.

“Don’t be so sure of that. You look amazing and carry yourself with confidence. That’ll give away that you’re a somebody.”

I tried to cock my eyebrow teasingly at him, but they were pretty much glued in place by the prosthetic brow. “Weren’t you the
